28 January 2010: East coast law firm Maddocks has appointed its first external board member, John Tabart.
"This new position was designed to provide an external perspective and encourage a greater level of independence to the Maddocks Board's decision making," said Maddocks CEO David Rennick.
"John joins me and five other partners in leading the firm to better service clients in our chosen sectors and to make the most of the opportunities presented by emerging economic trends, such as globalisation, increasing regulation and climate change."
In addition to his board duties, John Tabart will work with Maddocks CEO David Rennick and Sector Leaders – Greg Campbell (Infrastructure), Maria Marshall (Government), and Craig Ng (Finance & Services) – in helping develop and implement the firm's Towards 2015 strategy, with particular focus on the infrastructure sector.
"I am delighted to have been appointed to the Maddocks Board and look forward to contributing to the next strategic phase in the development of this long-established (125 years) but very progressive, dynamic and successful law firm," said John Tabart.
"It will be very rewarding to work with such a forward-thinking and focussed firm – a team with the self confidence, good sense and experience to welcome the input of an external board member."
As CEO of the Barangaroo, John Tabart is responsible to the Board of the Barangaroo Delivery Authority and to the NSW Government for redeveloping Sydney's new 1.5km long waterfront precinct (between Darling Harbour and Walsh Bay on the western edge of the Harbour Bridge) over the next ten years. He is also a non-executive director of Infrastructure Partnerships Australia.
Until February 2009 John was Managing Director of Explore Capital and Explore Investments, the London-based property development and funds management subsidiaries of Laing O’Rourke, the largest privately-owned construction group in Britain. He was also non-executive director of Sama Dubai and Sama Dubai Australia from 2006 to February 2009.
Before this John spent ten years as CEO of the Docklands Authority and VicUrban, the Victorian State Government's property development arm, which oversaw the landmark $16 billion, 200-hectare Melbourne Docklands precinct and 25 other Victorian developments.
John has also led the redevelopment of Brisbane International Airport (1992-1995), and was Managing Director of Lend Lease Residential in Sydney (1980-1987).
