Maddocks appoints new tax controversy partner

21 June 2010: Maddocks has appointed a new tax partner, Chris Kinsella, to its growing Tax Controversy team.

Chris was previously a senior tax partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) where he regularly advised many of Australia's leading corporates and financial institutions in relation to their tax affairs.

Led by high profile partners, Carmen McElwain and Peter Poulos, the Tax Controversy practice at Maddocks is a recognised leader in managing the entire tax lifecycle, which regularly involves Australian Taxation Office (ATO) enquiries, risk reviews and sometimes tax audits and litigation.

The team regularly acts for leading corporates and individuals in relation to tax disputes and in tax audits/compliance reviews and is often engaged to provide second opinions in addition to a taxpayer's traditional advisers – be they accountants or lawyers.

"Mr Kinsella joining Maddocks enhances our ability to meet the increasing demand from clients for assistance in liaising with the ATO and ensuring our clients are best prepared when the ATO comes knocking on the door," said Ms McElwain.

The team is unique in that it also regularly acts for the Australian Taxation Office in tax disputes. Partners Carmen McElwain  and Peter Poulos, along with others in the team, have a long history of acting for the ATO.

All partners in the Tax Controversy team have been advising clients on tax and their dealings with the ATO for more than 25 years. The team brings a full suite of tax technical expertise, tax reviews, audit and litigation expertise to clients.
