How Green is your product? Essential forum for Directors & Managers
March 2011
Sustainability & Climate Change
Did You Know?
- Research shows that almost 90% of Australian consumers are dubious about the environmental claims being made by companies;
- The Competition and Consumer Act 2010 has strengthened the ACCC’s ability to take action in relation to misleading or deceptive environmental claims, also known as ‘greenwash’;
- Legal consequences include fines of up to $1.1M for companies and $220,000 for individuals, plus costs. In addition, the cost of management time and reputational damage can be significant.
‘Greenwash’ involves companies making inaccurate or misleading claims about the environmental attributes of their products, their environmental credentials or the environmental credentials of companies in their supply chain. In many instances there is no deliberate intent to mislead, but things can easily go wrong if a company lacks the understanding or expertise about what makes a product genuinely ‘green’.
Companies who get it right can access a market for green products which is estimated to be worth $28 BN in Australia by the end of 2011.
ECO-Buy, Australia’s green purchasing experts, and Maddocks have put together an essential half-day forum for Directors and Managers of eligible* companies.
