Sam Ejtemai Quote Lawyer 2023 - Graduate Program

What teams were included in your firm rotation as a clerk?

Going into a clerkship, it was really hard to know what areas I would and wouldn't like. I rotated through the Development and Construction & Projects teams. Not only was I able to experience different types of work, which helped guide my decision-making about graduate rotations, but I was also able to build relationships more broadly within the firm. This made a massive difference when it came time to join the firm as a graduate lawyer.

What teams have you worked with as a graduate?

I’ve worked in Construction and Projects, Property Development, and Banking & Finance.

One thing that attracted me to Maddocks was the firm's work across the property and construction sectors. My rotations have allowed me to see the full lifecycle of the transaction from the property acquisition stage to the financing of the debt to the construction work. The cross-over between the teams has allowed me to work collaboratively with a number of lawyers through multiple disciplines and has contributed to my holistic development in this sector.

Among many exciting projects, a particular highlight of the year was working on the launch day of STH BNK By Beulah, a residential skyscraper that is proposed to be the tallest tower in Australia.

What's the best thing about working at Maddocks?

The people. I know that sounds cliché, but Maddocks has the most amazing workplace culture. The culture, along with the really interesting and challenging work that the firm undertakes, makes for a great place to work.

How has your career developed during your time at Maddocks?

I have found through my rotations that the firm provides opportunities to step up and challenge you when you feel ready and capable. This is through regular catch-ups with coordinators and People and Culture but also with the partners taking a very hands-on approach with junior career development. I have felt an acceleration in the development of my abilities because of this, and I look forward to continuing my career development at Maddocks.

What advice would you give a potential seasonal clerk?

Be yourself. The process is not designed to trick you or throw curve balls along the way. The best way to succeed to is just to be yourself and put your best foot forward.
