Meet Sunita Warrior
Sunita began her legal career at Maddocks as a graduate lawyer in 2014 and found her passion working in the property development team where she is now a senior associate.
I began my legal career at Maddocks as a graduate lawyer in 2014 and I am close to celebrating my sixth year as a property development lawyer. If you are wondering what property development entails, picture complex, fast-paced transactions that involve vacant land, farms, shopping centres, golf courses, apartment towers and master-planned communities – acquisitions, sales, complex advice and everything else in between.
I act for a broad range of clients which include institutional, foreign, local and boutique developers on a variety of matters in a constantly evolving regulatory and technological landscape, which means that there is never a dull moment.
As a seasonal clerk I rotated through the Development, Construction and Commercial teams, getting a taste of legal practice and enjoying a refreshing change from being buried in law textbooks.
It was during the Maddocks graduate program that I had the opportunity of rotating through four practice areas – consolidating my experience in our Development and Commercial teams as well as gaining exposure in Commercial Litigation and Public Law.
Having an opportunity to explore multiple areas of the law allowed me to test my interests and build foundational knowledge of other practice areas, as well as network within the firm. The key connections you make in other practice areas through the graduate program are extremely valuable as large transactions are all about teamwork and you will inevitably need to lean on the knowledge and expertise of others when working on them. The seasonal clerkship and graduate program at Maddocks bridged the gap between the aspiration and reality of legal practice and was a fantastic introduction to the firm and life as a lawyer.
A continuous commitment to learning (in all respects) is a key attribute of being a good lawyer and the firm is incredibly supportive of those who seek out learning opportunities. A formal mentoring program has been established in our Development team, where our junior lawyers are paired with partners for active career and skills mentoring. Graduate lawyers are also encouraged to attend external seminars to sharpen your legal skills and numerous opportunities to attend networking events to build your professional networks. If you are partial to being involved in a committee or two, there are plenty to get involved in like the Maddocks café Barcode committee, Maddocks Women Committee, Corporate Social Responsibility Committee and Maddocks Pride. With so many different opportunities available, time is your only limitation!
