Applications for the 2019 Maddocks Art Prize are now open

Wednesday 21 November 2018

The Australia Council for the Arts is now accepting applications for the 2019 Maddocks Art Prize from emerging Australian artists.

The Prize gives two emerging or early career Australian contemporary visual artists – one from Victoria and one from New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory – the opportunity to visit the Venice Biennale, regarded as the foremost showcase for contemporary visual arts in the world. Each of the two winners of the Maddocks Art Prize will receive a return airfare to visit the Venice Biennale, six nights' accommodation and a cash prize.

Applications close on 31 January 2019 and winners will be announced in March 2019.

First awarded in 2005, the Maddocks Art Prize is part of the firm’s long-standing commitment to Australian art. It complements the firm’s ongoing support of Australia’s representation at the Venice Biennale which began in 2001.

The Maddocks Art Prize is awarded every two years. In 2017 the Prize was won by James Nguyen and Noriko Nakamura. Past winners include Mira Gojak, Benjamin Armstrong, Richard Lewer, Trevelyan Clay, Justene Williams, Ash Kilmartin and Will French.

Maddocks partner and spokesperson for the firm’s national Art Program, Mark Henry, said the Maddocks Art Prize was designed to provide brilliant young Australian artists with the opportunity to meet and learn from some of the world’s leading artists.

‘Maddocks is proud to once again offer the opportunity for Australian artists to grow as people and artists through the Maddocks Art Prize and our support of Australia's representation at the Venice Biennale,’ Mark said.

The Australia Council’s Director for Visual Arts Laura McLeod said the Council was delighted to again partner with Maddocks to deliver this important opportunity for visual artists.

‘This is a valuable opportunity for an early career visual artist to gain insights into the global contemporary arts context at the prestigious Venice Biennale. It’s a wonderful example of the potentially career-changing opportunities we are able to deliver to Australian visual artists through these highly successful partnerships.’
