Diverse and inclusive: Maddocks recognised for gender equality

Maddocks has been recognised for the 16th consecutive year for its work in creating a workplace that provides opportunities for all of its employees.

Maddocks received an Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation today from the Commonwealth Government’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA). The firm was one of only 119 Australian organisations to receive the citation – down from 140 organisations last year due to a greater emphasis on accountability and evidence of success.

The firm was recognised for a range of initiatives designed to promote gender equality through analysing gender pay equity, promoting flexible work practices and developing future leaders of the firm.

Maddocks Senior Manager, Diversity, Inclusion, Wellbeing and Projects, Marita Pascoe, said the firm continued to place significant focus and resources on creating an inclusive workplace.

‘In the past year we have updated our flexible working strategy to emphasise to all of our people that they will be measured on their contribution to the firm, not how long they sit at their desk,’ Marita said.

‘We have also focused on programs that develop our next generation of leaders and refreshed the capability framework that drives career conversations with our lawyers so that they understand how they are progressing towards senior positions at the firm.’

Maddocks CEO Michelle Dixon said she was proud of the firm’s continuing role as a leader within the legal profession for gender equality.

‘During my six years as CEO of Maddocks, I am proud to have led a partnership and a firm dedicated to making sure that all of its people have the same opportunities to have the career they want,’ Michelle said.

‘From the partnership and Board through to the heads of our legal teams and legal support teams, we have an excellent mix of talented men and women who have risen to these positions.

‘It is no coincidence, in my view, that this shift has taken place at the same time as the firm has grown significantly in just about every measure – from partner and staff numbers through to revenue.’

WGEA director Libby Lyons said the eligibility criteria was strengthened this year to place greater emphasis on accountability, outcomes, evidence and internal reporting processes.

‘All these organisations are at the forefront of the momentum for change towards gender equality in Australian workplaces. These industry leaders are showing other Australian businesses how to create a better and more equal future for both women and men.’
