Maddocks has added to its growing Sydney office with the appointment of one of Australia’s leading intellectual property (IP) lawyers.
Ben Miller, who will join Maddocks in February, is a patent and technology specialist with expertise in IP commercialisation transactions, IP advice, litigation and dispute resolution. He has been consistently ranked by legal directories as one of Australia’s leading IP lawyers.
Ben has extensive experience working with clients in the healthcare, life sciences and technology sectors, including in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical devices and IT industries.
Maddocks partner and healthcare sector leader, Lucille Scomazzon, said that Ben’s appointment was a significant step in further strengthening the firm’s expertise and experience in the healthcare and technology sectors.
‘There is great synergy between the healthcare and technology sectors as they increasingly work with each other to improve patient care, develop medicines and build more efficient hospitals and care centres,’ Lucille said.
‘We see that synergy as an opportunity to bring our healthcare and technology teams closer together to assist our clients identify and take advantage of the opportunities available in this space.’
Maddocks partner and technology sector leader, Brendan Coady, said IP is increasingly important for clients in both sectors.
‘Intellectual property is vital for all organisations, especially those in the technology and healthcare sectors where we see significant investment in innovation and new products, and increasingly complex IP and regulatory landscapes,’ Brendan said.
‘From that perspective, Ben’s background and experience in IP commercialisation and dispute resolution will be of great benefit to our clients.’
Before joining Maddocks, Ben was a partner for many years at Ashurst.
This appointment continues a run of partner appointments in the Maddocks Sydney office over the past 12 months.
Arlene Colquhoun (Banking & Finance) and Brendan Tomlinson (Technology, Media & Telecommunications) were promoted to partner in July 2018, while Maree Skinner (Employment, Safety & People) and Catherine Merity (Equity Capital Markets) joined the firm last May.
