Lawyers sleep rough at the ‘G’

National law firm Maddocks slept rough at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in May, as part of the firm’s relationship with Melbourne City Mission (MCM). The firm’s Sleep at the ‘G team included Partner Julian Smith and Consultant Miriam McDonald, who raised vital funds to help fight youth homelessness by spending a great night at an iconic venue. Last year, nearly 700 people braved the cold to sleep rough at the MCG, raising more than $300,000 in the process. This year, the number of sleepers doubled and the initiative has raised  more than $440k thus far.

“The ‘G at night is magical. We were able to put our toes on the hallowed turf as we emerged from the race on to the ground – AstroTurf, that is…the security guard wouldn’t let us on the real stuff! There were singers, bands, hot soup and hot pies. Everyone had their cardboard boxes and sleeping bags, and onesies – it was quite the sight,” offered Miriam.

Proud of a bourgeoning Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agenda, Maddocks is committed to supporting organisations and individuals across initiatives to benefit the wider community. As part of the firm’s CSR activities, its professionals also provide pro bono legal advice to those unable to obtain representation without assistance.

“Last year’s money has been very well spent on improving MCM’s drop-in and support facility for homeless youth. The MCM has some incredibly worthwhile and, frankly, exciting plans for expanding this service to a youth refuge and accommodation – we’re proud to support this,” said Julian.
