Maddocks makes tech savvy move with special counsel appointment

Wednesday 26 October 2016

Maddocks has appointed experienced information technology (IT) and intellectual property (IP) lawyer Brendan Tomlinson as a special counsel.

Brendan brings to the firm vast experience, having worked at corporate law firms and in-house at leading technology suppliers and sophisticated technology customers, both in Australia and overseas. He has worked at British Telecommunications, Gilbert + Tobin and at IBM, where he managed the Law Department Services Team. He joins Maddocks from Ash St. Partners where he was IT & IP Team Leader.

Brendan advises on IT transactions of all types and sizes, including large-scale, complex outsourcing and integration projects, cloud-based offerings, data analytics and software licensing and development agreements. He also assists on IP protection and commercialisation, digital marketing and content, social media, sponsorships, privacy and cyber-security.

He began at Maddocks last week and is based in our Sydney office.

Brendan Coady, Maddocks partner and Technology sector head, said Brendan’s appointment complements the firm’s existing practice and further strengthens the team’s offering to clients.

‘Technology is one of our key sectors and Brendan Tomlinson will bring to the team an enormous amount of experience across a range of IT & IP legal issues gained by working in Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand,’ Brendan Coady said.

‘Technology is about constant change and being able to react quickly and where possible stay ahead of the rapid changes happening in the industry.

‘Brendan has shown during his career an ability to provide commercial and timely advice, in the context of the changing landscape of the technology sector. Clients will benefit from his in-depth knowledge of technology deals and offerings, including that gained from working for leading-edge technology suppliers.

‘Our commitment to continue building and developing our offering in the technology sector will be enhanced with the addition of Brendan to our team.’
