Greg Badcock Special Counsel

Background

Greg advises and assists Commonwealth government departments and agencies in relation to property matters, including acquisitions, disposals, leases and property management issues. Greg also has experience advising on planning, environmental and heritage matters, construction projects and general procurement of goods and services.

Greg joined Maddocks as a Special Counsel in July 2012. Before joining Maddocks, Greg worked as a Senior Legal Counsel for Airservices Australia. Greg has previously worked as a Senior Lawyer with the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service and as a Senior Associate at Blake Dawson (now Ashurst). Greg was ranked in the Australian Financial Review’s Best Lawyers in the category of Real Property Law in 2018.

  • Property transactions including disposal and acquisitions, leases of office accommodation and special purpose premises, licences

  • Drafted transaction documents for the Department of Finance and Deregulation (including tri-partite contract for sale and tender documents and Crown lease) and advised on numerous aspects of the sale of the Tuggeranong Office Park
  • Drafted transfer documentation and advised on heritage and environmental obligations relating to the disposal by the Commonwealth of Fort Scratchley (Newcastle, NSW), Macquarie Lightstation (Vaucluse, NSW), Westridge House (Yarralumla ACT) and Crown land at Sandy Point (Georges River, NSW)
  • Drafted sales documentation and Crown lease and provided planning advice in relation to sale by auction of mixed use development site at Barton, ACT
  • Drafted sales documentation for sale by auction of Customs House (Karratha, WA)
  • Drafted occupancy agreements between Finance and the Australian Electoral Commission for Finance owned property in Canberra and between Finance and Attorney-General’s Department for the Emergency Management Australia facility at Mt Macedon
  • Regularly advised the Department on the application of the Lands Acquisition Act, Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, Australian Capital Territory (Planning and Land Management) Act, the National Capital Plan, and the Commonwealth Property Disposal Policy
  • Drafted the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s template lease and licence and acted on lease and licence transactions across DAFF’s national property portfolio
  • Drafted Agreements for Lease and Lease documents for DAFF’s Fyshwick facilities
  • Acted on the disposal of residential property for DAFF, including providing advice on the application of the Lands Acquisition Act
  • Assisted DAFF to negotiate and drafted the documentation for the transfer of responsibility of the former Cocos (Keeling) Island quarantine station from the Department to the Attorney-General’s Department

Airservices Australia

  • Acted for Airservices Australia on the disposal of surplus land at Llandilo NSW, including the development of a disposal strategy that dealt with environmental, heritage and planning considerations
  • Acted on lease and licence transactions across Airservices Australia’s national property portfolio
  • Assisted Airservices with construction projects at Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Jandakot, Broome and Port Hedland airports
