At Maddocks, we are dedicated to elevating the profile of female counsel and strengthening pathways for diversity and inclusion. Building on this commitment, we are proud to launch the next edition of our equitable briefing publication, Lifting the Bar.
This year’s focus is national, reflecting a collaborative effort to drive meaningful change across the legal profession in Australia. Equitable briefing is a practical and powerful way to ensure a broader range of voices are heard at the bar table. In doing so, we unlock new ways of thinking, foster innovation, and strengthen the quality of our advocacy.
In this edition, we profile 79 of the country’s leading female counsel, who share their personal insights on why equitable briefing is not only fair, but also essential to achieving the best possible outcomes by drawing on the full breadth of available talent:
“Equitable briefing goes to a better justice system which is undermined if parts of society are not represented.”
Lucy Davis, Emmerson Chambers, VIC
“Equitable briefing (across all lines, not just gender) increases diversity of experience, through strategy and approach to resolving legal problems – this will almost always result in a better outcome for the client.”
Tamasin Jonker, Alinea Chambers, NSW
“Equitable briefing is important for encouraging more women to come to the Bar, and for ensuring female barristers have the same opportunities that male barristers have always had to develop the skills that are key to a barrister’s practice.”
Julia Wang, Owen Dixon Chambers West, VIC
We would like to once again thank the barristers who took the time to share their stories with us. Their generous contributions help to drive the important conversation around supporting diverse talent to shape a more inclusive future for our profession.
