Maddocks Pride

At Maddocks we believe that people perform at their best when they can bring their whole self to work. That is why we launched Maddocks Pride.

Maddocks Pride is our LGBTQ+ network focused on promoting inclusion, belonging and respect for our LGBTQ partners, staff and allies. Starting in 2016, Maddocks Pride has championed a raft of positive changes across the firm such as:

  • introducing gender-neutral policy language
  • the inclusion of pronouns in our email signatures
  • adopting the firm’s first gender affirmation policy
  • developing ally and inclusive language guides
  • running networking sessions for LGBTQ law students as part of our campus recruitment campaign
  • conducting regular LGBTQ Awareness and Empowering Allies training for partners and staff
  • acknowledging key days of significance such as IDAHOBIT, Wear it Purple and World AIDS Day
  • supporting LGBTQ charities and community organisations through our Maddocks Foundation and Small Grants programs

Maddocks Pride is active across all of our offices, with representatives from each office involved in our network, and is open for any partner or staff to join. We are dedicated to being a safe space where LGBTIQ+ identifying partners and staff nationally can come together to promote awareness, support each other and be a positive impact in our communities.

Maddocks Pride Week is also an important event in the firm’s calendar every year. The week sees events organised across all of our offices to celebrate and educate on LGBTQ issues.

In June 2022, Maddocks was named a Bronze Employer at the Australian Workplace Equality Index's 2022 LGBTQ Inclusion Awards - the third consecutive year we received this recognition.

  • The Pinnacle Foundation

On Wear It Purple Day in 2021, Maddocks announced funding of a Pinnacle Foundation Scholarship for the next three years.

The Pinnacle Foundation is a national charity that provides educational scholarships, mentoring and opportunities for young LGBTIQ+ Australians to realise their full potential and overcome challenges arising from their identity.

The Scholarships are awarded annually to young LGBTIQ+ Australians to undertake full-time tertiary studies to realise their full potential and overcome challenges arising from their identity. Scholars are paired with a mentor who will typically share the same academic and professional interests, gender identity and sexual orientation. The mentor acts as a role model and provides encouragement, support and inspiration to ensure the scholarship recipient is able to successfully complete their studies.

  • Wear It Purple Day

We are proud to mark Wear It Purple Day each year. Wear it Purple was established in Australia as an annual LGBTQA+ awareness day to show support and acceptance for young people in the community and to celebrate diversity.

Since 2010, Wear it Purple has developed into an international movement that Maddocks is very proud to be a part of.

Wear it Purple Day is celebrated worldwide and in each Maddocks office, on the last Friday in August. Partners and staff are encouraged to wear the colour purple to show solidarity with and support for rainbow young people, and we hold events such as in 2022 where we arranged for AFLW player Darcy Vesico to speak to our staff and share their story.

We are committed to letting the rainbow young people who work at Maddocks know they have the right to be proud of who they are and respect and celebrate their right to bring their whole selves to work – not just on Wear it Purple Day, but every day.

    Gender Equality Network

We are committed to driving initiatives that create gender equality in the workplace. Originally named Maddocks Women, founded in 1997, the Maddocks Gender Equality Network leads significant initiatives that promote gender diversity and inclusion. It is open to all genders.
