About Robert

Rob is an experienced commercial lawyer who focuses on advising and acting for Australian and international, public, for purpose (not-for profit) and private sector clients in the following key areas:

  • Advertising, Brands and Marketing and Competition (anti-trust) and Consumer Law

His clients operate in or regulate market sectors including education, energy, telecommunications, media and technology, health, professional sport, not-for-profit, retail, property and financial services.

Rob leads Maddocks’ national Education Sector team and has deep experience advising universities, private sector education providers, schools and education sector regulators in relation to governance and commercial matters, with particular experience in commercial contracting for and regulation of online education. 

Rob's technology and corporate advice encompasses technological solutions, IP, outsourcing arrangements, licensing, procurement, trade practices, AI and sustainability and climate change.

With a specific focus on for purpose (not-for-profit) and education sector organisations, Rob also has extensive experience advising clients in the IT, media, professional sporting, telecommunications, energy, health, and government sectors.

    Advising a range of organisations whose core purpose is not solely to make a profit for shareholders, including establishment and registration of charities, governance and directors duties, growth strategies including mergers and acquisitions and other BAU commercial advice.

    Rob is a non-executive director of the Emergency Services Foundation, a past director of Internet Australia and a past president of the Victorian Society for Computers and the Law.

  • Complex technology contracts and transactions

    Advising private and public sector clients on outsourcing, ICT and related services procurement and development including tendering and ICT procurement dispute avoidance and resolution strategies and non-litigious dispute resolution.

  • AI & Cyber

    Advising on AI Governance and implementation within education institutions, government agencies and businesses, cyber security and data privacy.

  • Privacy and data security

    Advising in relation to all aspects of privacy and data protection compliance.

  • Advertising, brands and marketing

    Advising on media rights protection and exploitation, sponsorship and commercial contracts, trade mark registration and enforcement, and Consumer Law compliance.

  • Competition (anti-trust), regulation and consumer law

    Advising regulators, public and private sector organisations on regulatory compliance under a range of regulatory schemes, including the Competition and Consumer Act 2010.

  • Intellectual property

    Advising in relation of copyright and trade mark protection and licensing, and commercialisation of research product. Acting in relation to and other IP transactions and due diligence investigations of IP assets.
